TERF27 (tracked 12/2/22 – 7/16/23)

TERF27 is an adult male bald eagle who was tagged and banded before being released on December 2, 2022, by the Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society (OWL) in Delta, BC. He had been rescued from Ladner, BC, on October 29th after a fight with another eagle. His USFW band number is 1098-03718 and he has a more readable blue band on his left leg with the characters X over 1.

Here’s a picture of TERF27 taken by Myles Lamont when he was banded and given his tracker just before his release; I think the slightly pinkish area on his head is one of the places he was injured.

Update August 19, 2023 – we followed TERF27 for 7-1/2 months, from December 2, 2022, until July 16, 2023, when he ended up at OWL. All I found out was that the eagle wasn’t in good shape when he was rescued, and probably didn’t survive, since the tracker was returned to David Hancock. During the time we tracked him, he split his time between the landfill in Delta, and Westham Island, home of the Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary and the Alaksen National Wildlife Area. The two areas aren’t far apart as the eagle flies, maybe 14km/9mi apart.

His tracker was later used on fledgling eaglet Bee, an offspring of TERF26/Annie designated TERF27a; this map just shows the travels of the original TERF27, but you’ll find data points for both of them on the combined map since that actually shows where the tracker has been, rather than the individual eagles.
