Zoo Atlanta pandas Lun Lun (female, pronounced loon loon) and Yang Yang (male, pronounced yahng yahng) were both born in Chengdu, China, in 1997, and came to Atlanta as juveniles in 1999. Like all pandas in North America, they are on loan from China. Their first cub, Mei Lan, was born in September 2006 and grew up on camera, being watched by viewers from around the world. He returned to China in 2010 (per the loan agreement, young pandas must be sent back to China before they turn four, though occasionally the return date is extended).

Lun Lun and Yang Yang have produced 6 additional cubs – Xi Lan in 2008, Po in 2010, twins Mei Lun and Mei Huan in 2013, and twins Ya Lun and Xi Lun in 2016. Ya Lun and Xi Lun are still at Zoo Atlanta, and can frequently be seen on the panda cam. They have just finished the weaning process so no longer spend time with Lun Lun – but will stay together while they are in Atlanta, so any time you see two pandas together, it’s them! And they are having a wonderful time exploring their world.
